The Future of Treating Cochlear Nerve Deficiency
نویسنده
چکیده
The main method of treating cochlear nerve deficiency, in the past, has always been using cochlear implants in hopes of improving an individual’s speech recognition and production. Presently, however, the efficacy of this procedure has been brought into question by way of new studies. These new studies suggest that auditory brainstem implants are the more effective procedure to treat cochlear nerve deficiency. This paper will compare these two procedures and their efficacy.

Cochlear nerve (CN) aplasia refers to the absence of a visible CN on oblique sagittal magnetic resonance images of the lateral aspect of the inner auditory canal (IAC). Magnetic resonance (MR) is the preferred technique in patients with sensorineural hearing loss and/or vertigo; however, computed tomography (CT) is used to evaluate the IAC or facial nerve canal. Three types of aplasia or hypopl...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE High-resolution T2-weighted fast spin-echo MR imaging provides excellent depiction of the cisternal and intracanalicular segments of the vestibulocochlear and facial nerves. Absence or reduction in caliber of the cochlear nerve (deficiency) has been described in association with congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Depiction of cochlear nerve integrity may be imp...
متن کاملMagnetic Resonance Imaging Evaluation for Predictive Factors of Cochlear Nerve Deficiency in Pediatric Cochlear Implant Candidates
The presence of a functioning cochlear nerve fiber is a crucial issue in the preoperative evaluation of pediatric cochlear implant candidates. Correlations between cochlear nerve deficiency and bony abnormalities of the labyrinth or internal acoustic canal (IAC) have not been well elucidated. The purpose of this study was to determine whether an inner ear or IAC anomaly could serve as a reliabl...
متن کاملCochlear Implantation in Patient with Cochlear Nerve Deficiency: A Case Report.
Diagnostic imaging methods are very important for patients with bilateral sensourinoural hearing loss. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is able to demonstrate the vestibulocochlear nerve and facial nerve in the internal acoustic canal. Also computed tomography can be helpful to determination of the deficiency of the cochlear nerve. Cochlear nerve anomalies are classified into three group accord...
